Today Livedrive announced the latest version of our powerful mobile app, which lets you access all of your files from anywhere on your mobile device. The latest version adds a whole host of new features and functionality, including beautiful-looking iPad support and some extremely exciting media streaming.

Our original iPhone app has been really well received since it’s launch in December last year, and thousands of happy customers around the world are already using it to access their photos, view their documents and listen to their music on their iPhone. The new version takes the app to the next level, with iPad support and the following great features:

Access all of your files, wherever you are. Whether you’re using Livedrive to backup your PC, or whether you’re using our Briefcase product to see the same files on every computer, Livedrive makes it easy to put your files online. Once they’re online you can access all of them from the Livedrive app – browsing through them exactly as you would on your computer.

Your iPhone and iPad are now unlimited. Because a Livedrive account comes with unlimited online storage space, you’re no longer limited by the capacity of your iPad or iPhone – anything you’ve uploaded to Livedrive is now available on your mobile device all of the time.

Streaming music, and streaming video. The previous version of the iPhone app let you stream your music directly from Livedrive wherever you were. It didn’t matter if the music was in iTunes or not: you could access all of it – and even browse tracks by artist, genre, album or year – and it played straight to your device, streaming over your Wi-Fi or 3G connection. The new version extends this support to not just MP3 files, but also iTunes M4A files, and more importantly to a whole host of video formats too! There’s no need to convert, resize or import the videos before they can play – even if they’re HD-quality video they’ll just stream straight to your device!

Your documents and photos, anywhere. Access all of your documents on your iPhone or iPad. Create slideshows of photos and they appear in beautiful full-screen glory on the device’s crystal-clear display; and scroll through your Office, iWorks, RTF or PDF documents to view them wherever you are. You’ll never be without your holiday snaps or that important spreadsheet again – even when you’re away from your PC.

Send photos and videos to your Livedrive account. The previous version of the Livedrive app let you upload photos taken on your iPhone’s camera straight to your Livedrive Briefcase, so that they were safely backed up and you could access them from anywhere. With iPhone 4 came beautiful HD-quality video, so we added video uploads too – if you’ve got a Livedrive Briefcase account then you can drop your videos onto your Livedrive online storage whenever you want.

Powerful integration with other apps. If you’ve tried the iWorks suite on your iPad, or one of the many eBook reader apps, then you’ll know how great it is to be able to interact with your documents on your device. The Livedrive app lets you send a document from your Livedrive account straight into any other app that supports it. So even if you didn’t sync that Word document to your device before you left the office, you can still retrieve it from your Livedrive account and send it into iWorks for editing on the go.

To get the app – or to see a demo video and a full list of features – please see our dedicated iPhone/iPad microsite. If you’ve already got the app installed on your device then you should see an update available in iTunes – just update it like you would with any other app to get the latest version. And finally, for some detailed answers to questions you can also check out the mobile app FAQs. We really hope you enjoy using the app – and if you have any questions or problems please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Our support team are available at support@livedrivesupport.com and will be delighted to help!

Livedrive have been working hard over the past few months to add some significant improvements to the Livedrive software for Windows and Mac. This is the software that runs on your computer and backs up your files as you work, and – if you have Livedrive Briefcase enabled – adds a new drive to your computer where you can view and edit your Briefcase files.

Both the Mac and Windows versions of the software have had a number of major upgrades behind the scenes, so although you won’t see any new features with this release, you should find that Livedrive synchronises your files faster than ever before. However because these improvements are quite major, we’re rolling them out as a public beta release first to get your feedback.

Before downloading the software, please read through the following notes:

These releases are beta releases for testing only – and are not officially supported. There may be bugs or issues that we haven’t discovered in our own testing. Please do not use them on files that cannot be replaced, or for critical backup tasks. As soon as the beta period is over we will roll out the update to all users – so if you are planning to use the newest version with critical files then we recommend that you wait until the official release. When this happens you will be notified by a popup from the Livedrive software, and Livedrive will take you through the update process.

The newest version of the Windows software changes a lot behind the scenes in the way that your files are managed – it’s much slicker and much smarter. However this does mean that once you’ve installed this beta release you will not be able to simply downgrade back to the current live version of the software – you will need to completely remove Livedrive from your computer first, and redownload your files onto your Livedrive Briefcase.

With those notes in mind, to download the latest software, please use the following links:

For Windows: livedrive.exe

For Mac: livedrive.dmg

Once the software has downloaded, run it and it will guide you through the upgrade process. As part of the Windows installation you will be asked to upgrade your Livedrive library to a newer version – the software will do this for you automatically. However if you have a very large backup set or a very large Briefcase then it may take a while to complete.

Once you’ve tried the release we would love to get your feedback on improvements that you would like to see or issues you’ve discovered. Please email our development team at betafeedback@livedrivesupport.com with as much detail as possible – including your operating system and what you were doing at the time. You can also use the Report Problem button in the Livedrive Control Panel to automatically send us detailed system information – which can be really helpful when fixing complicated problems – and Mac users can find some helpful troubleshooting advice on the Livedrive forum. To access the forum just log into your Livedrive account at https://www.livedrive.com/login and click on Help.

When we first launched Livedrive Backup, our mission was to make it as easy as possible to install and set up. When you first install Livedrive on your PC or Mac, you get asked exactly which folders you want to protect:

… and then if you want to backup any other folder in future you just right click on it and select “Backup with Livedrive Backup”:

… and it’s all done. As soon as a folder is selected for backup, Livedrive starts protecting your files in the background. Any new files you save in that folder, or any files that you change, will be backed up in almost real time – it’s that easy.

Many people don’t realise that it’s also just as easy to review and manage your backup sets – for example to see which folders are backed up, or to stop backing up certain folders. To do this, simply open the Livedrive Control Panel from your Start Menu or Desktop and go to the Services tab:

… and then click on Manage Backup Settings. A window like this will appear:

This screen gives you a full picture of exactly what Livedrive Backup is doing and which folders are being protected. A green tick against a folder means it’s backed up, while a green box indicates that the folder is not backed up, but contains folders further down that are backed up. If you click on a folder then Livedrive will give you a summary of where it is up to with the backups – saying “Not selected for backup” if the folder is not selected to be protected, “Scheduled for backup” if the folder is selected but the files have not yet uploaded, and “Backed up” if the files are up-to-date online.

You can also change your backup settings from this screen – tick on any ticked folder to stop Livedrive from backing the folder up, or tick on any unprotected folder to add it to your backup sets. When you’re finished, click on “OK” and Livedrive will instantly start backing up your selected folders in the background.
